Tips to become (and appear) more confident

My favorite tip is to get out of your comfort zone by being a bit pushier than you usually are, by asking for things that you wouldn’t otherwise ask for. Practice being brave and shameless. Ask for a discount in a place where you’d usually never ask for a discount, or ask them to give you something for free on top of what you’re paying for.

It’s impossible to fail at this. Whether you get what you ask for or not is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that you do ask.

Betsy Mikel published an article on Inc.com titled Do This in Your Next Job Interview to Sound More Intelligent and Project Confidence.

The TLDR version is this:

  • Replace filler words (um, like, you know, uh, …) with silence. Just pause. A two second pause will project more confidence than a “you know” that you fill in to think what you want to say next.
  • Become aware of the filler words you habitually use by recording yourself in a conversation and then listening to it daily for five minutes, paying special attention to your filler words.
